Training Approaches
Medical assisting curricula vary greatly in cost, design, and implementation. Each vocational training program is unique because of each school's traditions and culture, competency and training demands, values and resources; and their job training approach.
It all depends on the school's location, size of classes, and faculty. However, there also are many similarities between schools such as how they implement the curriculum, the use of eclectic, individualized techniques and the way content is organized by job tasks, building on employees' job knowledge.
Which Training Programs are Best?
Graduates from medical assistant programs that are licensed by a regulatory entity that's a branch of the United States Department of Education, and approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) are eligible to sit for AAMA's Certified Medical Assistant exam to earn the CMA credential. These medical assistants can also elect to sit for the AMT's Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam. Although certification is not required for medical assistants to work it is a means to document professional knowledge and skills, which in turn is important to remain competitive and employable on today's highly competitive job market in the health care industry.
What Should I Look for In a Distance Education Program?
Good distance education programs have explicit measurement standards, such as using pre- and posttests based on grades; providing frequent feedback to students and instructors; measuring success by application of skills in job performance (such as the externship at a job site); and including observations of changes in work habits and attitudes as well as student reactions.
