What Can Medical Assistants Do?
Many employers (physicians, licenced health care practitioners, nurse managers, medical office supervisors) are unsure of what tasks can be directly assigned to the medical assistant. Although legal requirements addressing the medical assistant's scope of practice vary from state to state, every state mandates that medical assistants work under the direct supervision and license of the physician or licensed health care practitioner under whom they are employed.
Medical assistants should receive initial direct supervision and their work should be periodically assessed. The licensed health care practitioner in charge must determine the skill level and capabilities of each medical assistant they hire and supervise. Along with the responsibility of training and supervising them, the employer also must also take the risk of liability and quality control into account when assigning tasks and delegating work to the medical assistant, especially in the clinical areas.
Delineating A Medical Assistant's Role
In addition, medical assistant's role and responsibilities should be clearly delineated and communicated to other medical office staff to maximize the productivity of the medical office/health care team. Always remember: Medical assistants are not licensed health care professionals, and are prohibited from making independent medical assessments (triage), independently fill prescriptions, or give medical advice (never-ever!!!). Medical assistants who received their training on campus usually have learned keyboarding and medical transcription skills, and with adequate front desk experience they have the skills to function as medical records clerks, or transcriptionists, or billing specialists.
