Recent Trends for Medical Assistants
Although graduation from an accredited program is not mandatory to work as a medical assistant... The vast majority of employers are not satisfied with the training level medical assistants receive from non-accredited, unrecognized training programs (according to D. Rincon, Head Instructor for medical assisting training and certification, San Francisco City College, personal communication, 2004).
Therfore it is important that present and future medical assistant students point their career into the right direction by graduating from the right vocational program and then, getting certified as soon as possible. The results will pay off in a way that's almost impossible to explain in just a few words.
Regarding Certification
Many medical assistants have told us that not having sought certification as soon as possible was a mistake they came to regret. They felt that working without certification made their positions tougher and the pay they deserved much harder to achieve. Therefore, to not put the same road blocks in your career path register for nationally recognized professional certification exams as soon as possible upon your graduation from an accredited medical assistant school. More complex physician office practice leads to an increase in the number of better trained medical assistants:

What Are Future Trends?
Medical assistants are transitioning into a professional arena with professionals who went to school for a very long time and need competent medical assistants. They want some assurance that their medical assistant is serious about this profession, and will not jeopardize their medical licenses, and cause their malpractice insurance premiums to increase. Therefore, more and more medical assistants, their instructors, and employers are beginning to advocate licensing of medical assistants. This would be one step up from the (still) voluntary certification.
